Bestiary

AN ALPHABETICAL BESTIARY

book design & ILLUSTRATION

A collaborative work with other students to create a miniature book about mythical beasts and monsters. Each student randomly drew 2 letters and they are responsible to create imagery and work with letterpress typefaces. We were also responsible for gathering book cover material and embossments and later bind each signature into a book to create a book on mythical creatures.

Process

I first picked out the letters drawn from a hat to illustrate and typeset a beast image and name. The letter I chose was A and B, and chose Al-Mir’aj and Bigfoot as my beasts. I then folded a 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, folded it into fours, drew out the image on it, and transferring the image onto tracing paper and placed it backwards on a linoleum block. After that I retraced the reversed image onto the block and used marker to make my lines thicker.

Letterpress

After carving, i’ve inked my block and made proofs of where my placement of the image would go onto a edition. I also made proofs on typesetting.
